Our mechanics meticulously inspect every donated bike to ensure it is road-worthy and safe. Each component is thoroughly checked, with any defective parts expertly repaired or replaced. Once the work is done, a second mechanic performs a follow-up check for added safety measures.
B4K’s cleaners are committed to ensuring that every bike is in top-notch condition before it goes out. They are highly detailed and thoroughly clean off any grease, dirt, or adhesives present. They replace seats and other cosmetic components, getting rid of rust, and doing whatever it takes to make the bikes look as good as new.
Bike prep work – some roles just deserve their own category! Preppers check the valve stems, replace tubes, and fill flat tires, doing all necessary work within their skillset to get the bike ready for mechanics. This role is vital because it maximizes mechanics’ efficiency and optimizes the bike’s performance.
Some bicycles have been loved beyond their useful life. Our bike parters and sorters assess incoming bikes to determine repair viability or to pass them on to other organizations. For those that cannot be salvaged, we repurpose the useful parts, giving them new life in another bike.
Volunteers are key to maintaining the B4K operation, and we need your help to manage the site effectively. As a Facility Maintenance volunteer, you play a crucial role in providing aid with tasks such as handiwork, occasional mowing and minor snow removal, as well as moving, stacking, and storing bikes.
The On-Site Coordinators perform various tasks to ensure the operations run smoothly. These include taking visitors on tours, preparing helmets and locks to be issued with each bike, managing supplies (excluding bike parts), and being the on-site point-of-contact.
Fulfillment Coordinators play a pivotal role in delivering bikes promptly to those in need. Upon receiving an order, these coordinators carefully choose bikes from our inventory and place them in the mechanics’ queue. They keep a close eye on each bike as it undergoes repair and cleaning, and communicate with the requestor to organize a pick-up time. Additionally, they monitor our inventory, ensuring the availability and proper location of each bike.
Volunteering for special projects can be a great way to help out! Opportunities may include assisting with events, fundraising, or even hosting events on-site. We’re always on the lookout for volunteers to lend a hand and support our initiatives at B4K.
